Artist Statement
I am intrigued by the way (Western) society strives to understand nature. By placing ourselves outside or even above nature, we assume a role in which we investigate, describe and classify nature. As a result, we seem to have lost the connection with it and are slowly destroying our planet.
How can we restore this connection? And what role does photography play in this process, both now and in the past? My work does not result in an answer to these questions, but shows the visual exploration into these connections. Like a scientist, I observe my environment with infinite curiosity and apply the method of continuous doubt. In doing so, the camera acts as my research tool. Unlike a scientist, I try to let go of control by experimenting with different photographic techniques, thereby giving natural processes space and embracing the inexplicable.
